CHAPTER 29

PRESENT

Stephanie stood up and wrapped herself in a silk robe. She looked down at the source of even breathing. It had been a while since she allowed a man to stay over and he was still asleep on the other side of the bed. She smiled internally, thinking about their exceptional sex life. Her thoughts turned quickly to the coin he bought from the Indian in Oklahoma, or so he said.

It certainly looks authentic, but I suspect there is more that he isn’t telling me. I’m sure I will bring him around soon. She walked into the kitchen put up a pot of coffee, resisting the urge to sneak into her special closet with its masks and clothes. She’d been so busy she hadn’t been in there for over a week. Her secret possessions allowed her to become whomever she wanted whenever she wanted. Better not. If he wakes up and follows me he will be shocked by what he sees. Instead, she showered and dressed. She was due at Gerald’s in a couple of hours.

When she walked back into the kitchen, Zakariah was at the table drinking coffee. “I didn’t know how long you’d be so I didn’t pour your cup.” He walked over and kissed her passionately.

“Be a good boy now, Zak. I have an appointment. We will continue this later,” she said, catching her breath.

Stephanie knew she needed to give him some information, but the question was, how much? They hadn’t reached a firm decision about working together, and keeping his information limited was the option she chose for the present. She was in delicate territory. If she and Gerald made a presentation to the Golden Hunters’ Club Zakariah would know she held back, a lot.

“I’ve been helping Gerald Smith sort through Martin’s research on the Confederate gold. Poor dear really isn’t at all organized. He called and asked me to go over this morning and sort through old newspaper clippings he found. Probably will amount to nothing, but I did promise.”

Zakariah smiled. “Interesting. You, with all your accomplishments, agreed to play secretary to him?”

“C’mon now. You know me at least well enough to know that I’m hoping to find something intriguing in Martin’s papers, but I need Gerald to trust me so I help him from time to time.”

“At least you’re honest.” Zakariah laughed. “Will I see you later… fingers all smudged with old newspaper ink?” he teased.

“Maybe I can think of something interesting to do with my smudged fingers,” she answered, spinning away from his grasp but not fast enough.

Zakariah pulled her in close, his lips skimming the side of her neck. The familiar feel of his strong arms weakened her resolve. I guess I’m going to be a little late…I’m sure Gerald won’t mind.

***

Zakariah dressed and left with Stephanie. He didn’t suggest staying in her house to wait for her. That would be too presumptuous and he had plans of his own. Driving back to his apartment he thought about the gold and what he hadn’t shared with Stephanie.
